Transforming the RAF Museum: Access, Archives, Buildings
We have a clear vision of how we want our Museum to look in ten years' time and of how to create the best possible experience for all our visitors and supporters.
Our ambitious plans include:
- landscaped gardens to provide more green spaces, secluded picnic areas and tree-lined walkways
- exciting learning zones and exhibition areas
- greatly improved facilities, including a larger car park, shop and wonderful cafe and restaurant
- moving all our important archives into one place so they can be properly looked after and easily accessed
- telling the stories of the people who were involved in the Battle of Britain and other important military engagements
- designing and constructing a beautiful, striking building to display our world-famous Battle of Britain collection. It will be known as the Beacon.
Because of the huge heritage significance of our plans, we have applied to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a substantial grant. We will know whether we have been successful in this at the end of April 2012. If we are, then the future for our historic site, our archives, our artefacts and the last remaining human stories will be assured.
